After years of vision and planning, Fjörður as a destination is finally becoming a reality. Construction officially began on November 28th, 2022 — marking the start of a new chapter in the heart of Hafnarfjörður. Fjörður will be so much more than a shopping center. It’s set to become a vibrant destination where people meet, connect, and experience local culture and lifestyle.
With the expansion, Fjörður will offer visitors an exciting variety of shops, services, and experiences — creating a lively destination in the heart of Hafnarfjörður. The new library is set to open its doors to the public in May 2026, adding even more life and culture to the area.

A Walk Through Time:
The Story Behind Strandgata
Strandgata is one of the oldest streets in Hafnarfjörður, formed where the town expanded beyond the lava fields in the 19th century. The street followed the shoreline, where ships docked and the fishing trade flourished. In the latter half of the 20th century, land reclamation began east and below Strandgata, as part of the development of the town centre. The area where the hotel, shopping centre, and parking spaces now stand was once part of the sea. Through land reclamation, space was created for housing, parking, and improved access to the harbour. In honour of this historic street, we chose to name our hotel Strand Apartments.
